Miami held Georgia Tech to its second-lowest yardage total this season but still came up short as the Yellow Jackets defeated the ‘Canes 27-21. Georgia Tech has now won three straight games and five of six to become bowl-eligible after failing to qualify for a bowl in two of the last three seasons.
Starting quarterback TaQuon Marshall returned to the Tech lineup and took full-time control of the Yellow Jackets’ offense. Marshall ran for 92 yards with two touchdowns and threw for a score. The Yellow Jackets’ top-ranked running attack gained 231 yards against Miami’s defense, which ranks second in the nation in total yards allowed.
Ultimately, turnovers proved to be the difference in the game, as Georgia Tech’s defense forced two fumbles and the special teams forced a third, the three takeaways leading to 13 Georgia Tech points. Miami’s three lost fumbles were its most in a game since it lost three in a 52-13 loss at Kansas State on Sept. 8, 2012.
After falling behind 27-14 midway through the third, the Hurricanes cut the lead to 27-21 with less than seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, but the Yellow Jackets held the ball the final 6:43, denying Miami a chance for a go-ahead touchdown.
Miami travels to Blacksburg to take on Virginia Tech on Saturday. Meanwhile, Georgia tech will host Virginia.
Texas scores late to beat Texas Tech
Sam Ehlinger and Lil’Jordan Humphrey connected on a 29-yard touchdown pass with 21 seconds to play Saturday, lifting Texas to a thrilling 41-34 road win over Texas Tech. Texas is now 51-17 all-time against Texas Tech, including five straight wins in Lubbock.
After falling behind 27-10 late in the third, Texas Tech went on a 24-7 fourth-quarter run to tie the game with 1:45 remaining. However Ehlinger and the Longhorns responded with a 7-play, 75-yard drive to thwart the Red Raiders’ valiant comeback effort. Ehlinger finished the game going 22-of-34 for 312 yards while Humphrey finished with eight catches for a career-high 159 yards and two touchdowns.
Texas hosts Iowa state next weekend, while Texas Tech hits the road to take on Kansas State.

Syracuse used a 30-point second quarter to down Louisville 54-23 in the Orange’s final home game of the season last Friday in the Carrier Dome. ‘Cuse improved its record to 6-0 at home this season, the fourth unbeaten home campaign in the building’s history.
In a span of 8:15 Syracuse turned a tight, 10-7 contest, into a 37-7 game at halftime. The Syracuse rushing attack led the way, totaling 326 yards on the ground and five touchdowns. Senior quarterback Eric Dungey also completed 14-of-27 passes for 192 yards and added 62 yards on the ground and two scores.
The Orange are now 8-2, tying the 1998 team for the most regular-season victories since the 1997 squad finished 9-3.
Despite the loss, the Cardinals registered 203 yards rushing, their second highest total of the season behind only the 204 yards posted against Western Kentucky. Quarterback Jawon Pass rushed for a career best 80 yards on 12 carries.
The Cardinals will look to break out of a seven game losing streak next week as Louisville hosts NC State on Saturday. Syracuse, meanwhile, will take on Notre Dame at Yankee Stadium.
Iowa State beats Baylor
Iowa State jumped out to a 20-point lead and held off Baylor to win its fifth-consecutive game on Saturday.
With the 28-14 win, the Cyclones earned bowl eligibility for the second-straight season and improved to 6-3 overall and 5-2 in Big 12 play, while the Bears fell to 5-5 overall and 3-4 in conference action. This is the first time that Iowa State has won five straight conference games in a single season.
Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy led the Cyclones, completing 18-of-23 passes for 230 yards and a touchdown. Purdy also rushed for 56 yards and a score. Baylor quarterback Charlie Brewer had a strong showing despite the loss, completing 26 of 36 attempts for 288 yards and two touchdowns.
Iowa State travels to take on Texas in a critical Big 12 showdown next weekend, while Baylor hosts TCU in Waco.
