Iowa State upsets West Virginia
Iowa State defeated a ranked opponent for the second consecutive week, as the Cyclones knocked off West Virginia 30-14 on Saturday.

This is the second time in school history that ISU has defeated ranked opponents in consecutive games (1973, Missouri and Oklahoma State). The Cyclones are now 6-0 in October the last two seasons, including four wins over ranked opponents. During that span ISU has knocked off three unbeaten teams in October (Oklahoma 2017, TCU 2017, West Virginia 2018).
West Virginia’s offense that entered the game averaging more than 525 yards, but were held to just 152 yards on Saturday The Cyclone defense dominated the contest, recording seven sacks for the second-straight game. ISU held Mountaineers quarterback Will Grier to just 100 yards on 11-of-15 passing. The West Virginia offensive output of 152 yards was its lowest this century.
Despite its struggles offensively, West Virginia hung close early and closed the gap to 20-14 at the half thanks to a 72-yard blocked field goal return by Derek Pitts, Jr.
The Cyclones put the game away in the fourth quarter, however, when Deshaunte Jones hauled in a 32-yard strike from Brock Purdy with 12:17 left in the game. Purdy then connected with Matthew Eaton for the two-point conversion to make it 28-14 and the Cyclones later tacked on a safety with 5:14 to play thanks to a West Virginia hold in the end zone.
Iowa State will have a week off before hosting Texas Tech on October 27. West Virginia will also have a bye week before hosting Baylor on Thursday, October 25.

Virginia had a homecoming to remember, as the Cavaliers defeated Miami 16-13 to claim the program’s first win over a ranked team since beating then-No. 21 Louisville in 2014 at Scott Stadium.
Despite the Cavaliers having 231 total yards to 339 for Miami, the Hoos scored the first 10 points of the game never trailed. Virginia’s defense held the Hurricanes without a first down in four of their first five drives and the Cavs held the Canes without a touchdown in the first half.
UVA was leading 16-6 in the fourth quarter when Miami drove 93 yards for a touchdown to make it a one-score game with 3:04 to play. However, on the ensuing kick Virginia’s Evan Butts returned an onside kick attempt for 30 yards to give UVA the ball at the 27.
After forcing a fourth-down, a Miami personal foul penalty allowed Virginia to keep possession and ultimately run out the clock.
Making the third start of his career, Miami’s quarterback N’Kosi Perry finished 3-for-6 for 20 yards and two interceptions. He was replaced by QB Malik Rosier with 11:16 remaining in the first half. Rosier finished out the game, throwing for 170 yards on 12-of-23 passing.
Virginia travels to Durham next week to take on Duke while the Hurricanes will have a week off before taking on Boston College on the road on Friday, October 26.

Duke scored 21 points in the final 1:50 of the third quarter to pull away from Georgia Tech and defeat the Yellow Jackets 28-14. Duke’s victory snapped Georgia Tech’s nine-game home winning streak against unranked opponents.
Tech was unable to maintain its offensive momentum after scoring more than 60 points in back-to-back wins over Bowling Green and Louisville, as the Blue Devils’ defense held the Yellow Jackets to 229 yards rushing, 144 below their nation-leading average.
The teams entered halftime tied at 7-7, but Georgia Tech, which hadn’t committed a turnover in the last two games, turned the ball over on three-consecutive touches in the third quarter (two offensive plays and a kickoff return). Duke’s Daniel Jones threw three touchdown passes following the giveaways, including a 48-yard touchdown pass to T.J. Rahming to give Duke a 28-7 lead.
Tech’s Jerry Howard cored a 2-yard run midway through the fourth quarter to cut Duke’s lead to 28-14, but the damage from the turnovers proved insurmountable. Howard led the Ramblin’ Wreck with 62 yards rushing.
Georgia Tech has a week off before taking on Virginia Tech on the road on October 25. Duke will take on Virginia at home next week.
Texas Tech beats TCU
TCU had 411 total yards of offense against Texas Tech on Thursday night, but couldn’t overcome its own mistakes as the Horned Frogs fell to the Red Raiders 17-14 at home. The Horned Frogs had three turnovers on the night, including an interception in the end zone, and had a missed field goal attempt as Texas Tech snapped TCU’s eight-game win streak at home.
With TCU leading 14-10, Texas Tech quarterback Jett Duffey scored on a 38-yard quarterback draw, giving the Red Raiders the lead with 7:02 to play. Duffey finished 13-of-24 passing for 190 yards, including a 62-yard touchdown to Ja’Deion High in the third quarter. Duffey also had 16 carries for 83 yards.
The final drive for TCU ended when Shawn Robinson scrambled from one side of the field to the other on fourth-and-1 before the ball appeared to slip out of his hands and was intercepted by Adrian Frye in the final minute.
TCU will host Oklahoma next Saturday while Texas Tech will host Kansas.
