Dicker the kicker seals Texas upset
Texas true freshman kicker Cameron Dicker nailed a 40-yard field goal with nine seconds to play on Saturday to lift Texas to a 48-45 win over Oklahoma — the Longhorns’ first Red River Rivalry victory under coach Tom Herman.
With the win, Texas improved to 5-1 overall for the first time since the 2009 season, when they started 6-0. The Longhorns are also 3-0 in the Big 12 Conference for the first time since 2013. UT’s 48 points are the most points the team has ever scored against Oklahoma, and the 93 combined points between the teams are the most in series history, eclipsing the 85 combined points (OU 45, Texas 40) scored in 2016.

Additionally, for the first time in series history, both Oklahoma (532) and Texas (501) gained over 500 total yards of offense. Sam Ehlinger’s 24-of-35 314 passing yards are the fourth-most in school history against Oklahoma and marked the 17th 200-yard passing performance against the Sooners in school history.
Both teams started fast on offense, with the Longhorns scoring on all four of their first-half drives. Oklahoma scored a late touchdown in the first half to cut the deficit to 24-17 at the half. UT’s offense continued the assult in the third quarter, outscoring the Sooners 21-3.
Oklahoma wasn’t finished, however, and responded in a big way, scoring 21 points in the fourth quarter, matching its highest fourth-quarter total in series history. The last time the Sooners scored 21 fourth-quarter points against Texas was in 1952. Quarterback Kyler Murray threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Lee Morris with 8:28 left in the fourth and the Sooners would then total four plays for 124 yards and two touchdowns on their next two drives to tie the game 45-45 with 2:38 to play.
The Longhorns, responded and drove down the field to set up Dicker, whose field goal handed Oklahoma just its second loss in its past 29 games against Big 12 competition.
Next week, Texas returns home to host Baylor, while Oklahoma has a bye week before hosting TCU on October 20.
Miami escapes upset, beats FSU late
After falling behind 27-7 in the third quarter Saturday, Miami scored 21 unanswered points to defeat Florida State 28-27 at Hard Rock Stadium. The victory gave Miami back-to-back victories over the ‘Noles for the first time since 2004 and snapped a streak of six straight home losses in the series.

FSU jumped out to an early lead when Keith Gavin caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Deondre Francois. The Seminoles continued the momentum throughout the first half and took a 20-7 lead into half. Florida State then pushed the lead to 27-7 when D.J. Matthews returned a punt 74 yards for a touchdown to give the Seminoles a 20-point lead with 11:52 left in the third.
Following a Florida State turnover with 6:42 left in the third, the Hurricanes scored two touchdowns in a span of 42 seconds, as N’Kosi Perr connected with Lawrence Cager for a 3-yard touchdown, Michael Pinckney picked off Francois, and then Jeff Thomas caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Perry on the following play.
FSU kicker Ricky Aguayo missed a 43-yard field goal with 12:42 left which kept the ‘Canes within one score. On the ensuring drive, Perry connected with Brevin Jordan for a 41-yard touchdown, and Miami’s defense held FSU scoreless for the rest of the game to seal the win.
Overall, the ‘Canes defense held the Seminoles to just 200 total yards, including just 45 total yards in the second half. Next week Miami travels to Virginia, and Florida State has an off week before hosting Wake Forest on Oct. 20
Iowa State upsets Oklahoma State
Led by third-string quarterback Brock Purdy, Iowa State’s offense put up a season high 48 points in a 48-42 upset of Oklahoma State on Saturday.
Purdy, who had played just one series before this game, stepped in for Zeb Noland — who was starting his fourth straight game in place of injured starter Kyle Kempt — on the second series and immediately sparked Iowa State, completing 18 of 23 attempts for 318 yards and four passing touchdowns.

Purdy’s four touchdown passes tied the ISU freshman single-game record (Sam Richardson at Kansas, 2012; Grant Rohach at West Virginia, 2013). With leading rusher David Montgomery out with an injury, Purdy also led the Cyclones in rushing with 84 yards on 19 carries, including a 29-yard second-quarter touchdown run.
The Cyclones entered the day ranked last in the Big 12 in both scoring (17.5 points per game, 122nd in the nation out of 130) and yards (299.5 per game, 123rd overall) but reached season highs in both categories, amassing 465 yards overall.
The victory improves Iowa State to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in Big 12 play and also snapped a six-game losing streak against Oklahoma State and a five-game losing skid in Stillwater.
Oklahoma’s State’s Justice Hill broke the Big 12 running back record in the defeat by scoring a rushing touchdown for a 12th consecutive game. The previous mark was held by Ricky Williams (Texas, 1997-98), Darren Sproles (K-State, 2002-03), Cedric Benson (Texas, 2003-04) and Jorvorskie Lane (Texas A&M, 2006).
Next week, Iowa State returns home to take on No. 9 West Virginia while Oklahoma State hits the road to face Kansas State.
Notre Dame holds on against Virginia Tech
A strong second-half effort silenced a rowdy Lane Stadium crowd on Saturday as No. 6 Notre Dame defeated No. 24 Virginia Tech 45-23 in Blacksburg.

Although the Hokies outgained the Irish 441-438, the Irish held them to just two touchdowns on the night. The Irish also scored 28 second-half points while limiting the Hokies to just a touchdown in the final two periods. The Irish have now outpaced No. 7 Stanford and No. 24 Virginia Tech by a combined score of 45-13 in the second half over the past two weeks.
Irish quarterback Ian Book completed his first seven pass attempts on the opening drive of the game, accounting for 58 yards and ultimately finished with 271 yards through the air on 25-of-35 passing with two touchdowns and an interception. Kicker Justin Yoon became Notre Dame’s all-time leading scorer, connecting on a field goal and five extra points to bring his career total to 321, bypassing Allen Pinkett’s previous mark set in 1985.
Notre Dame’s 45 points were the most allowed by Virginia Tech in regulation at Lane Stadium since a 49-12 loss at the hands of Houston on Sept. 28, 1974. Notre Dame’s 22-point margin of victory was its largest road win against an AP ranked team since a 51-0 rout of No. 10 USC on Nov. 26, 1966
Irish wide receiver and Citrus Bowl hero Miles Boykin gained over 100 yards receiving for the second straight week, picking up 117 yards on eight catches, while Damon Hazelton was a bright spot for the Hokies, catching 12 passes for 131 yards and score.
Iowa beats Minnesota in shootout
Iowa defeated Minnesota on Saturday 48-31 at TCF bank Stadium to retain possession of the Floyd of Rosedale bronze pig trophy for the fourth straight year. The Hawkeyes have now won four in a row and 14 of the last 18 meetings against the Gophers.
The Hawkeyes never trailed in the game after jumping out to a 14-0 lead on their first two possessions. Iowa also led 28-17 at the half and 38-24 through three quarters. Overall, the 48 points scored are the most by the Hawkeyes in the series since a 55‐0 win in 2008.
Quarterback Nate Stanley completed 23 of 39 attempts for 314 yards, finding T.J. Hockenson, Ihmir Smith-Marsette, Nick Easley and Noah Fant for scores. Hockenson added a short touchdown run on a fake field goal in the second quarter.
Iowa returns to action Oct. 13, traveling to Bloomington to face Indiana. Minnesota plays at Ohio State next Saturday.
