The ACC won three of five matchups against the Big Ten this week, going 9-5 overall in a week that featured two conference matchups.
#11 Clemson 20, Louisville 17
The Tigers (3-0, 1-0 ACC) earned their fifth-straight Thursday night victory as the Cardinals (0-3, 0-1 ACC) late-game comeback fell short. Trailing 20-10 with nine minutes to play, Traveon Samuel returned a Clemson kickoff 100 yards to cut the lead to three. Louisville’s final two drives resulted in a missed field goal and an interception at Clemson’s 18-yard line. Dating back to last year, the Cardinals have lost four straight, matching their longest losing streak since 2011
#9 Florida State 14, Boston College 0
The Seminoles (3-0, 1-0 ACC) extended their current road winning streak to 13 games, handing the Eagles (2-1, 0-1 ACC) their first shutout since 2010. On the opening drive of the game, Florida State QB Everett Golson capped an eight play, 86-yard drive with a nine-yard touchdown pass to Travis Rudolph. Boston College went on to hold the Seminoles to just 134 yards on offense for the rest of the game, including just 54 total rushing yards for RB Dalvin Cook. But the Seminoles defense held the Eagles to just 195 total yards, and turned the lone fumble of the game into a 36-yard return for the final touchdown of the game.
#8 Notre Dame 30, #14 Georgia Tech 22
A historic 91-yard touchdown run by C.J. Prosise proved to be difference for the Fighting Irish (3-0), as a Yellow Jackets (2-1, 0-0 ACC) comeback in the final minute fell short. Prosise rushed for 198 yards and three touchdowns and his record-breaking run from scrimmage gave Notre Dame a 30-7 lead with just under seven minutes left. Georgia Tech QB Justin Thomas connected with Patrick Skov for a 24-yard touchdown with 48 seconds remaining, and after the Yellow Jackets recovered the onside kick the pair connected again with a 15-yard score with 22 seconds left. Notre Dame’s Torii Hunter, Jr. recovered Georgia Tech’s second onside kick attempt to seal the win for the Fighting Irish.
#23 Northwestern 19, Duke 10
It was the tale of two halves for the Blue Devils (2-1, 0-0 ACC), as the Wildcats (3-0, 0-0 Big Ten) gained 214 yards of total offense and scored 16 points in the second half to remain undefeated. Duke held Northwestern to just 57 yards of total offense in the first half, leading 7-3 at halftime. The Wildcats held the Blue Devils to just a field goal in the second half.
North Carolina 48, Illinois 14
The Tar Heels (2-1, 0-0 ACC) held the Illini (2-1, 0-0 Big Ten) to just 14 points, QB Marquise Williams threw for 203 yards (17-24) and three touchdowns, adding 105 yards on the ground. Elijah Wood rushed for 129 and scored a touchdown
Virginia Tech 51, Purdue 24
The Hokies (2-1, 0-0 ACC) won their first-ever game in the state of Indiana, holding the Boilermakers (1-2, 0-0 Big Ten) to just 265 yards of total offense. QB Brenden Motley threw two touchdown passes and ran for one, and Virginia Tech’s defense and special teams also scored touchdowns. The Hokies led 24-17 at halftime then scored the first 20 points of the second half to put the game out of reach.
Iowa 27, Pittsburgh 24
Hawkeyes (3-0, 0-0 Big Ten) K Marshall Koehn kicked a 57-yard field goal with time expiring to hand the Panthers (2-1, 0-0 ACC) their first loss of the season. For Pittsburgh, QB Nate Peterman threw for 219 yards (20-29) and two touchdowns and Tyler Boyd caught ten passes for 131 yards and one touchdown. Trailing by ten at halftime, the Panthers tied the game at 17 when Pat Amara, Jr. returned a blocked punt into the end zone. Each team scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter before Koehn kicked the game-winner, the longest field goal of the senior’s career.
Miami 36, Nebraska 33 – OT
The Hurricanes (3-0, 0-0 ACC) had a 23-point lead with eleven minutes remaining, but needed Michael Badgley’s 28-yard field goal in overtime to defeat the Cornhuskers (1-2, 0-0 Big Ten). Nebraska QB Tommy Armstrong threw for 309 yards (21-45), including three fourth quarter touchdown passes. On the first play of overtime, he was intercepted by Corn Elder at Miami’s goal line and four plays later Badgley kicked his fifth field goal of the game for the win. Hurricanes QB Brad Kaaya threw for 379 yards (25-42) and two touchdowns and Joe Yearby rushed for 125 yards and one touchdown.

Virginia (1-2, 0-0 ACC) defeated William & Mary (1-1, 0-0 CAA), 35-29
Wake Forest (2-1, 0-1 ACC) defeated Army (0-3), 17-14
NC State (3-0, 0-0 ACC) defeated Old Dominion (2-1, 0-0 CUSA), 38-14
Big 12
The Big 12 went 5-2 in week three, with all three of the conference’s Top 25 teams earning their third wins of the season.
California 45, Texas 44
QB Jerrod Heard’s school record 527 yards of total offense was not enough as the Longhorns (1-2, 0-0 Big 12) late rally fell short against the Golden Bears (3-0, 0-0 Pac 12). Heard rushed for 163 yards and three touchdowns and threw for 364 yards (20-31) as Texas rallied back to score 20 unanswered points in the fourth quarter.
#3 TCU 56, SMU 37
The Horned Frogs (3-0, 0-0 Big 12) extended their winning streak to 11 games, rolling up 720 yards of offense against the Mustangs (1-2, 0-0 AAC). Trevone Boykin threw for 454 yards (21-30) and five touchdowns, including two to Josh Doctson (5 catches, 171 yards). Aaron Green rushed for 164 yards and two touchdowns, while Boykin added 50 yards and a rushing touchdown of his own.
#16 Oklahoma 52, Tulsa 38
The Sooners (3-0, 0-0 Big 12) outlasted the Hurricane (2-1, 0-0 AAC) in an offensive shootout (773-603 total yards). Baker Mayfield threw for 487 yards (32-38) and four touchdowns, adding 85 yards on the ground and two rushing touchdowns. Samaje Perine gained 152 yards rushing with a touchdown to anchor the 286-yard ground game.
#25 Oklahoma State 69, UTSA 14
The Cowboys (3-0, 0-0 Big 12) forced seven turnovers, all of which led to points, in their rout over the Roadrunners (0-3, 0-0 CUSA). Chris Carson rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns and Mason Rudolph threw for 280 yards (17-23) and two touchdowns, as Oklahoma State racked up 529 yards of total offense. The defense matched UTSA’s offensive scoring effort, returning two of their five fumble recoveries into the end zone.
