Throughout the college football season, members of the Florida Citrus Sports Team Selection Committee are out on the road to meet with fans of our partner schools to spread the word about the Russell Athletic Bowl and the Orlando Citrus Bowl.
Here are some of the games where we will be in attendance this weekend:
#9 Notre Dame (1-0) at Virginia (0-1, 0-0 ACC) – 3:30 p.m. on ABC
It’s hard to believe there are any “firsts” left for the Fighting Irish football program, but Saturday will be their first-ever game in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Senior RB C.J. Prosise returns to his home state fresh off a near 100-yard rushing performance in Notre Dame’s victory vs. Texas. The Irish will need him as they try to replace Taurean Folston, last year’s leading rusher who was lost for the season with an ACL injury last week. The Cavaliers look to bounce back from their 34-16 loss at #13 UCLA. Virginia is the only team in the nation facing three AP preseason poll members in the month of September.
#19 Oklahoma (1-0, 0-0 Big 12) at #23 Tennessee (1-0, 0-0 SEC) – 6:00 p.m. on ESPN
The Neyland Stadium crowd (102,455 capacity) will likely become the largest ever to witness a Sooners’ football game. Oklahoma gained 539 yards in total offense last week in their 41-3 win over Akron, while the Volunteers gave up 557 yards of total offense in their 59-30 victory at Bowling Green.
Iowa (1-0, 0-0 Big 10) at Iowa State (1-0, 0-0 Big 12) – 4:30 p.m. on FOX
The battle for the Cy-Hawk Trophy will be waged Saturday afternoon in Ames. The Cyclones have won 10 of the last 17 games against their cross-state rivals, while the Hawkeyes hold a 40-22 advantage all-time. Last week, Iowa State defeated Northern Iowa 31-7 behind a stellar defensive performance. DE Dale Pierson anchored the effort with a key interception, and a career-high three sacks. As a unit, the Cyclones recorded six sacks and 13 tackles for loss, most in a decade. Iowa won their season-opener against Illinois State 31-14, amassing 431 yards of total offense while limiting the #2 ranked FCS team to just 231 total yards, less than half of their 2014 per game average.
Here are the rest of the ACC and Big 12 games:
#3 TCU (1-0, 0-0 Big 12) hosts Stephen F. Austin (0-1, 0-0 Southland) Saturday at 3:30 p.m. on FOX Sports 1. The Horned Frogs defeated the Lumberjacks 67-7 during their first-ever meeting back in 2008.
#4 Baylor (1-0, 0-0 Big 12) hosts Lamar (1-0, 0-0 Southland) for its home opener at 7:30 p.m. on FSN. It’s the first meeting between the teams since 1981. The Cardinals won that game 18-17 on a 42-yard field goal by Mike Marlow with three seconds remaining. Prior to the upset, the Bears won the team’s two previous meetings in 1979 and 1980. Baylor’s 25-1 home record since 2011 is the best in the nation.
USF (1-0, 0-0 AAC) faces #11 Florida State (1-0, 0-0 ACC) at 11:30 a.m. on ESPN. The Bulls head to Tallahassee for the first time since their 17-7 upset of the Seminoles in 2009. Last week USF rolled over FAMU 51-3, posting 566 yards of total offense while allowing the Rattlers just 12 yards rushing. Meanwhile, Florida State handled Texas State 59-16 via 636 yards of total offense. Transfer QB Everett Golson threw for 302 yards (19-25) and four touchdowns, while RB Dalvin Cook rushed for 156 yards and two touchdowns.
#12 Clemson (1-0, 0-0 ACC) will host Appalachian State (1-0, 0-0 Sun Belt) at 12:30 p.m. on ESPN3. It’s the first meeting between the two teams since 1997, and the Tigers have won all four games in the series dating back to 1984.
Tulane (0-1, 0-0 AAC) heads to #15 Georgia Tech (1-0, 0-0 ACC) for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff on RSN. The Green Wave dropped their home opener to Duke 37-7, while the Yellow Jackets rolled over Alcorn State 69-6. Georgia Tech looks to extend its current streak of 15 straight games rushing for 200 or more yards, the nation’s longest active streak.
Friday night at 8:00 p.m., Miami (1-0, 0-0 ACC) travels to Florida Atlantic (0-1, 0-0 CUSA) on FOX Sports 1. Beginning at Noon on Saturday, UTSA (0-1, 0-0 CUSA) hosts Kansas State (1-0, 0-0 Big 12) at the Alamo Bowl on FOX Sports 1, while Louisville (0-1, 0-0 ACC) hosts Houston (1-0, 0-0 AAC) for their home opener on FSN. Wake Forest (1-0, 0-0 ACC) travels to Syracuse (1-0, 0-0 ACC) for 12:30 p.m. kickoff on the ACC Network.
At 1:00 p.m., Texas Tech (1-0, 0-0 Big 12) hosts UTEP (0-1, 0-0 CUSA) for their home opener on FOX, Howard (0-1, 0-0 MEAC) heads to Boston College (1-0, 0-0 ACC) on ESPN3, and ROOT will broadcast Liberty (1-0, 0-0 Big South) at West Virginia (1-0, 0-0 Big 12). Furman (0-1, 0-0 Southern) heads to Virginia Tech (0-1, 0-0 ACC) at 3:30 p.m. on ESPN3.
Four 6:00 p.m. games will also be available on ESPN 3; Pittsburgh (1-0, 0-0 ACC) at Akron (0-1, 0-0 MAC), North Carolina Central (1-0, 0-0 MEAC) at Duke (1-0, 0-0 ACC), North Carolina A&T (1-0, 0-0 MEAC) at North Carolina (0-1, 0-0 ACC), and Eastern Kentucky (1-0, 0-0 Ohio Valley) heads to North Carolina State (1-0, 0-0 ACC). Kansas (0-1, 0-0 Big 12) will host Memphis (1-0, 0-0 AAC) at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN3, and Oklahoma State (1-0, 0-0 Big 12) hosts Central Arkansas (0-1, 0-0 Southland) at 7:30 p.m. on FSN. On the Longhorn Network, Texas (0-1, 0-0 Big 12) hosts Rice (1-0, 0-0 CUSA) at 8:00 p.m.
