American Week Four Preview

Connecticut (0-2) hosts No. 14 Michigan (3-0) for the first time in school history. The Huskies fell at home to Maryland in week three, 32-21, despite passing for 349 yards. Michigan executed a goal-line stand to sneak past Akron, 28-24. Michigan claimed a 30-10 win over UConn in 2010 in Ann Arbor.

SMU (1-1) visits a No. 9 Texas A&M (2-1, 0-1 SEC) squad coming off a close home loss to No. 1 Alabama. The Mustangs had a bye week following a one-point victory versus Montana State. SMU is led by senior QB Garrett Gilbert, who has completed 69.1% of his passes this season.

No. 6 Louisville (3-0) returns home to face Florida International (0-3) after a win over in-state rival Kentucky. QB Teddy Bridgewater eclipsed 1,000 passing yards on the young season in the Cardinals’ 27-13 triumph. The Louisville defense has been just as impressive, however, allowing only 9.0 points per game. FIU dropped its third-straight, falling to FCS team Bethune-Cookman, 34-13.

Houston (2-0, 1-0 AAC) makes the short trek across town to face Rice (1-1). The Cougars have allowed just 13 points in each of their victories to start the season, while Rice fell to Texas A&M before beating Kansas. Houston is 7-3 over Rice in the last 10 meetings.

Two of the nation’s top running backs face off as Rutgers (2-1) hosts SEC foe, Arkansas (3-0). The Scarlet Knights are led by RB Paul James, the nation’s leading rusher with 493 yards. Razorbacks’ RB Alex Collins is not far behind, however, having tallied 418 yards on the ground.

Cincinnati (2-1) travels north to face in-state opponent, Miami (OH) (0-2). The Bearcats rebounded from a tough loss at Illinois to defeat Northwestern State, 66-9, behind 669 yards of total offense. Senior QB Brendon Kay filled in admirably in place of injured Munchie Legaux, throwing for 275 yards and four touchdowns.

Memphis (0-2) hosts Arkansas State (2-1, 1-0 Sun Belt) following a 17-15 loss on the road at Middle Tennessee State. Memphis K Jake Elliott was 3-for-3 on field goals in the defeat. Arkansas State is coming off of a 41-34 victory over Troy on Thursday night.
